Should LUU work with the University of Leeds to launch a vape recycling initiative?

Passed: November 2023 (14th)

What is the current problem, and how does it affect students?

Vaping is on the rise, especially among students, with over half of 18-24-year-olds in the UK using disposable e-cigarettes in 2023. The appeal of vaping lies in its tasty flavours, accessibility, and the perception that it's less harmful than traditional smoking. However, this trend poses significant risks to students' health. Nicotine addiction, respiratory issues, and long-term health problems are potential consequences, potentially impacting academic performance and overall well-being.

Students often discard vaping materials carelessly, contributing to environmental pollution. The lack of awareness about responsible disposal and the growing number of users compound this issue. The consequence for students is a disconnect from sustainability and environmental responsibility, as they may not realise their role in protecting the environment.

The limited availability of recycling resources for disposable vape materials is problematic, making it inconvenient for students and the general public to dispose of waste responsibly. This, in turn, leads to improper disposal methods and discourages recycling efforts, exacerbating environmental pollution. Insufficient awareness among students and the general public about the significance of recycling disposable vape materials perpetuates environmental harm.

The lack of understanding regarding the consequences of improper disposal, such as pollution and harm to wildlife, results in a reluctance to engage in recycling initiatives. Raising awareness is crucial for fostering a sense of environmental responsibility.

What is your proposed change? Why would this Idea benefit students?

The idea is to introduce accessible and eye-catching recycling bins across campus, designed to resemble disposable vape devices, attracting students' attention (Figure 1).

These bins will be strategically placed in high-traffic areas. The collected vape waste will be disposed of responsibly through university collaborations with waste contractors.

The list of benefits to students is found below:

1. Environmental Consciousness: This initiative will instil eco-awareness among students, fostering a culture of sustainability.

2. Campus Image: The university's commitment to social responsibility will enhance its image, appealing to prospective students and faculty. 3. Health Awareness: The policy will serve as a platform to educate students about vaping's health risks.

4. Community Engagement: Students will actively participate in recycling efforts, strengthening their sense of belonging within the university community. This change promotes environmental responsibility, health education, and a stronger, more engaged campus community.

Have you considered the impact of the proposed change for traditionally underrepresented student groups?

Traditionally underrepresented groups may have specific health concerns or vulnerabilities. Raising awareness about the health risks associated with vaping and offering support for those looking to quit can be especially beneficial for these students.
