Encouraging students, especially international students, to get involved with campus life is one of the university’s priorities. Every year we have students who are not confident in their use of academic language and need support with developing their academic literacies; this not only leads to a weaker performance in terms of their assessed work, but also negatively impacts on their experience of university life, their sense of belonging to the institution and their willingness to interact with home students.
Because of this, it is important that all faculties embed academic literacies and academic language development within all taught programmes, in joint collaboration with the Library's Learning Services Team and the Language Centre, alongside appropriate promotion of co-curricular, optional support for students to self-select.

Nov 2022: The Learning Development Team has recently recruited three Digital Learning Advisors who are developing a new set of digital learning support for students, both within academic programmes and through a co-curricular programme of activities and resources. Embedding of literacies also a key part of Curriculum Redefined.
July 2021: Nicole, new International & Postgraduate Officer, met with the Skills@Library team alongside the Student Engagement Coordinator (International). There is a wider Academic Literacies Strategy under discussion at the University and a push for this to be a campus-wide approach. LUU are involved in a working group for this project.
May 2021: Franks (International Officer) has has initial conversations with Learning Services and Library Services about how international students would be impacted by this policy. A working group with University and LUU staff has been set up to begin work on this. As the new members of the Exec come into post, this work will be handed over to Nicole (International and Postgraduate Officer for 2021/22).
