The University should work more closely with LUU societies in sustainability initiatives

Passed: March 2020 (17th)

What do you want? / Why do you want it?

LUU should work with the University to ensure that student societies are included in discussions about sustainability and the circular economy. In particular, this should seek to ensure that societies are able to make the best use of old university equipment that is no longer needed. This is to stop the university from throwing away old equipment that could be used by student societies.

May 2021: Several things being done around this policy within the Union:

  • A policy was passed in the May 2021 Forums about the provision of Carbon Literacy Training to all new committee members and reps. The aim of this is to contribute to greater sustainability awareness and action.

  • LUU is in the process of sourcing litter pickers which societies will be able to loan.

  • LUU is currently supporting Green Action Co-Op to expand their presence within the Union.

February 2021: The Student Exec and Activities Exec have begun working with the University's Sustainability Architects on their research to reduce plastic use in LUU clubs and societies. All teams plan to collaborate on this after conducting research with societies to see how this can be developed into a wider initiative.

June 2020: Unfortunately there are no major updates to this work over the summer as a result of lots of LUU staff being furloughed (ongoing), as well as the LUU building and campus being closed. As staff return to work and the new Officer team settle into their roles this will be picked up again.

April 2020: University Sustainability have reacted very positively to this discussion and are keen to work together on initiatives. The Academic Representation Team have also been looped in as they support several societies linked to schools (like Shock Soc which the proposer is a member of).

March 2020: New Policy - the proposer has already met with the Political Engagement Team alongside University Sustainability Services to discuss the idea and wider initiatives.
