LUU should lobby the University to formalise a Buddy Scheme for International Students

Passed: May 2019 (14th)

What do you want? / Why do you want it?

An Opt in buddy scheme to run before the university year starts for all international students. UK student ‘Buddys’ can be matched with international students based on interests. This scheme could include a buddy dinner early on in the semester among other things.

  • It would create a warmer atmosphere for international students and allow them to learn about a new culture in a fun way and maybe even make some new friends

It would provide a platform for domestic students who would like to help international students have the best possible time at the university.

Expires: May 2022 (14th)

May 2021: January launch not achieved due to delays caused by COVID and lockdowns between August and May. However, Franks has formed a working group within the University whose focus will be how to gather the material and staff resource around a buddy scheme.

August 2020: Franks, your International Officer, has spoken to the Vice Chancellor about this, with the aim of a launch for January.

June 2020: Unfortunately there are no major updates to this work over the summer as a result of lots of LUU staff being furloughed (ongoing), as well as the LUU building and campus being closed. As staff return to work and the new Officer team settle into their roles this will be picked up again.

March 2020: LUU's first ever International Officer, Franks, has been elected. This and several other policies will fall under his remit.

September 2019: No update as yet, LUU's Global Programmes Team are interested in a similar scheme. The Political Engagement Team will meet with them to discuss.

May 2019: New Policy
