LUU should require societies to offer yearly memberships to all students

Passed: May 2019 (13th)

What do you want? / Why do you want it?

As a fresher I felt I was pressured by a society that only sold a lifetime membership and only opened it for a limited time. I and others feel that this pressure selling tactic lead to us parting with money we would not have otherwise.

Societies are expensive at the best of times, by only offering multi-year memberships the societies involved may be excluding students from less well off backgrounds and creating unnecessary barriers to engagement. The union exists for all it's students and I believe is an organisation committed to inclusivity and protecting its members from being taken advantage of in anyway. In light of this I believe we should compel societies to offer yearly memberships.

Officer: Activities

Area of Work: Societies

October 2020: We have done some work in the background of our memberships system (MSL) which means that lifetime memberships can no longer be offered by societies.

June 2020: Unfortunately there are no major updates to this work over the summer as a result of lots of LUU staff being furloughed (ongoing), as well as the LUU building and campus being closed. As staff return to work and the new Officer team settle into their roles this will be picked up again.

March 2020: PET assessing with Activities.

November 2019: Proposer working with PET and Activities to identify remaining societies.

October 2019: It appears that this is an issue that affects only a handful of societies, as and when issues arise the Activities Team will work directly with the society to resolve and provide alternative membership options.

May 2019: New Policy
