LUU should take steps to ensure accessibility in all areas of the Union

Passed: March 2020 (16th)

What's It About?

Although the Union Upgrade greatly improved the accessibility of our Union building, there are still certain spaces with issues that make it difficult for disabled students to fully participate in LUU activities. LUU needs to prioritise finding solutions to these to prevent the physical exclusion of many people with different impairment needs from accessing their Union.

I propose that the union takes steps to ensure the accessibility of the union to people with different impairments throughout the whole building and any future Union-run spaces. This should be done through working closely with and consulting people with different impairment needs.

Area of Work: Accessibility

August 2020: Bins across LUU have been adapted to make them usable/accessible by wheelchair users (larger holes to make them more easily reachable). This has been a long time coming and we'd love to hear any feedback you have on the new bins - get in touch at

July 2020: Unfortunately there are no major updates to this work over the summer as a result of lots of LUU staff being furloughed (ongoing), as well as the LUU building and campus being closed. As staff return to work and the new Officer team settle into their roles this will be picked up again.

  • Focus in the first instance though is the safe, phased re-opening of the Union building and of campus more generally.

March 2020: The idea was resubmitted and passed at the March 2020 Better Forum with slightly amended wording (above).

January 2020: This policy will be resubmitted at the March 2020 Forums with the intention of having it renewed.

December 2019: Lower bins should be arriving in January 2020. The Pyramid Theatre floor is an ongoing concern, and something that senior staff at LUU continue to raise with the University. As part of the original LUU refurbishment project the University should have resolved this. At the time a ramp was put in which was deemed unsuitable and then removed. As part of the LibCos Disability history Month campaign, Terrace now has a full set of braille menus!

October 2019: No updates to below in regards to progress. LUU Accessibility will be a campaign across Disability History Month.

May 2019: Pyramid Theatre floor is not accessible - this is on the agenda for several finance/facilities meetings.

May 2018: There are a whole range of further updates and upgrades coming to LUU. Automatic door at the North entrance, power assisted doors etc. Remodel of front of building. Lower bins.

March 2017: Vlog from the Equality & Diversity Officer went out, explaining the hashtag, and using Helpdesk to answer any questions. Will be doing reorientation tours when upgrade is over and at start of next academic year. Any updates will be on website, minor updates tweeted. Braille menus, and also accessibility guidelines for events in the making.
