LUU should lobby the council for increased safety measures around Woodhouse Moor

Passed: March 2020 (16th)

What do you want? / Why do you want it?

The debate around Woodhouse Moor lighting has gone on for years. Lighting on the pathways in Woodhouse Moor would create dark spots surrounding the paths while lighting up lone walkers (and their possessions) passing through. However, this doesn't mean we should not push for action to improve student safety around the park. This could look like lobbying for improved lighting on the streets around the park or even lobbying for the park to be gated and locked overnight.

April 2021: Sophia and Lotti raised the issue with Alex Sobel MP who has agreed to organise a meeting with the new West Yorkshire mayor once elected to discuss how the Students’ Unions can influence safety policy across West Yorkshire.

March 2021: Sophia (Welfare Officer) and Lotti (Community Officer) have set up a project and campaign group with Beckett SU, LUU reps, and some societies to discuss student safety. They won't just be focusing on Woodhouse Moor but are looking at working with the council on safety strategies for across Leeds as well as tying it in with campaign ideas.

June 2020: Unfortunately there are no major updates to this work over the summer as a result of lots of LUU staff being furloughed (ongoing), as well as the LUU building and campus being closed. As staff return to work and the new Officer team settle into their roles this will be picked up again.
