LUU should lobby the University to do more to support Working Class students

Passed: May 2019 (14th)

What do you want? / Why do you want it?

I think that LUU should lobby the University to do more to support working class students. As it is now policy for LUU do support working class students, I think it would make sense for the University to also play a part in improving the experience for WC students on campus.

Updates

April 2020: New Liberation Coordinator Team recruited, their remit now includes 'Working Class' and they will be working to put on events and campaigns across the year.

February 2020: Working Class Awareness Week took place and was successful, it will now form part of our long term planning. Either as a bespoke week again, or as events across the year (appearing in History Months, as Give & Take events or talks elsewhere on campus for example).

January 2020: Working Class Awareness week is taking place from 10-14 February 2020, led by Cat the Community Officer.

October 2019: PET and Community Officer have met with Clare from Changing Perspectives to discuss how we might link-up. Working Class campaigning is a priority for members of the Exec, and there'll likely be an idea heading to the first set of Forums to support this work.

June 2019: Working Class discussion series launched on YouTube.

June 2019: Initial 'Working Class Report' written by Tamsin, Equality & Diversity Officer, delivered to LUU staff and University staff. Based on the focus groups and research she's been undertaking over the last year. The report will form the basis for work moving forwards, both for the University and the incoming Exec team. Incoming Community Officer, Catheryne, has Working Class issues as a key part of her manifesto as well.

May 2019: New Policy

March 2019: A partner idea to this one passed at Better Union. Tamsin, E&D Officer, ran a Working Class Panel event and has more plans for campaign work over the rest of the year.

December 2018: Working Class Panel Discussion took place. Alongside the event, Tamsin wrote an article on Medium.
