The University should ensure only recorded lectures are timetabled for Wednesdays

Passed: May 2019 (14th)

What do you want? / Why do you want it?

The University of Leeds encourages students to participate in sport and seeks to provide ‘one of the best sporting experiences in the UK’. Despite this, balancing Wednesday sport and Wednesday lectures is notoriously hard & people who represent the uni on a Wednesday often can’t go to Wednesday morning lectures. There’s currently no policy to ensure that only recorded lectures fall on a Wednesday, meaning unrecorded lectures often fall on Wednesday mornings and student athletes can’t catch up on them.

Given the majority of lectures are recorded anyway, a commitment to ensure that only recorded lectures fall on a Wednesday would mean that people who wish to represent the university on a Wednesday afternoon don’t find themselves academically disadvantaged for doing so.

Updates

August 2020: The University's Lecture Capture Policy has been updated - however, it's currently unclear whether Wednesday afternoons are still held for sport in the current circumstances and we're also unclear on how timetables will actually look if the majority of lectures/seminars are online.

June 2020: Unfortunately there are no major updates to this work over the summer as a result of lots of LUU staff being furloughed (ongoing), as well as the LUU building and campus being closed. As staff return to work and the new Officer team settle into their roles this will be picked up again. What we might see in light of Covid and more teaching taking place remotely and digital platforms being used is that more lectures are recorded ands that system becomes widely utilised.

December 2019: ART have heard that use of the llecture capture system has reduced in some areas, Abiha, Education Officer, is trying to find out what's going on. ART have been speaking to reps about it to try and build up a more complete picture.

October 2019: Main issue is with universality - take up of Lecture Capture is not campus-wide and not linked specifically with timetabling. To help us out with this, if you're a member of a sports club and are finding that you have lectures that clash with games/practice please get in touch with LUU.PET@leeds.ac.uk with details of your course.

May 2019: New Policy, willallow us to put extra pressure on via our existing Lecture Capture Policy.
