The University of Leeds should formalise student participation in academic staff interview panels

Passed: May 2020 (12th)

What do you want? / Why do you want it?

Although this has been practiced before, there has been a push to make interview panels for academics smaller, a decision that was made to the disadvantage of the students. Since most of the appointments are made internally and the fact that external applicants prefer to remain anonymous until their interview date, the current practice is an impediment to student-led initiatives, such as the "decolonisation of the curriculum". Prof Tom Ward, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor is already on board with the proposed idea and sees no reason not to have student representation at interview panels for academic staff. I think this formalisation would be a great leap forward to have more student influence on university appointments.
