The University should record all induction talks

Passed: March 2020 (17th)

What do you want? / Why do you want it?

There are many reasons why students may be unable to attend welcome talks and inductions when they arrive at the University. Students should not miss out on this vital information just because they couldn't attend in person and if they were recorded and accessible throughout the year it could have a real positive impact for people settling into life at Uni.

Induction period can also often feel overwhelming and students are expected to retain a huge amount of information from memory. Recording inductions could take some of this pressure away and give students the chance to revisit this information whenever they feel they need it. We also know that teaching spaces are already fitted with tech to support lecture capture so this shouldn’t be a difficult change to make.

Updates

August 2020: All induction talks will be recorded due to Covid, and made accessible in some way digitally (for 2020/21 at least).

June 2020: Unfortunately there are no major updates to this work over the summer as a result of lots of LUU staff being furloughed (ongoing), as well as the LUU building and campus being closed. As staff return to work and the new Officer team settle into their roles this will be picked up again. Planning for Freshers' Week and Induction Talks are underway though, with a focus on digital content due to limited access to campus and reduced capacity in buildings.

April 2020: This is already a key area of work for LUU's Marketing and Academic Representation Teams alongside the University, in regards to LUU's involvement in planning and delivery of talks across induction week. For 2019/20 inductions LUU filmed a vide to be shown rather than sending officers out to every induction and we are trying to encourage the University to adopt that approach so that induction talks can easily be shared and we can guarantee students have access to the same information. Video content can easily be subtitled as well to increase accessibility.
