The University should include a lecture at the beginning of each semester outlining the practical information around the mental health support available both at the university and the local GP etc

What do you want? / Why do you want it?

The NHS is currently developing a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training scheme for schools, focussed around training staff on how to identify and support students who may suffer from mental health issues. I propose that this could be incorporated into the first few weeks of student’s university study in order to provide us with the essential information that would enable us to help ourselves.

In providing these lectures at the beginning of each semester, I believe this would encourage students to reach out and be more proactive with taking those first steps towards having more control over their mental and emotional welfare. If we had more knowledge surrounding how to initially identify mental health issues within ourselves and those around us, then we would be more equipped to manage it.

These lectures should include information surrounding all the services the university and the union offer, such as the drop-in help and advice sessions, the MIND Matters society events, and all the available resources online. Regarding the current university counselling system there should be more transparency outlining the waiting time and self-referral forms, as well as information outlining alternative support resources that can be accessed. For example, more detail on the Leeds Student Medical practise and what they can provide would be essential. This could include information that would usually only be communicated through word of mouth, such as having to arrive at the medical practise at 8am to get an appointment on the day. This is essential information that should be readily available and presented, not only to first year students, but also to the students who have been here a longer time but may have never sought help or been aware of what is available.

From a long-term perspective, the waiting-time for counselling sessions from the university needs to be improved, but right now with this change, the university could make a step towards preventing and managing the communication of what support is available.

Updates

August 2020: These slides are included, and are quite comprehensive. For 2020/21 these inductions will be almost all online, and we are also working to have 're-inductions' through the year. University also working on additional training for staff, especially given the transition back to Uni post-Covid.

June 2020: Unfortunately there are no major updates to this work over the summer as a result of lots of LUU staff being furloughed (ongoing), as well as the LUU building and campus being closed. As staff return to work and the new Officer team settle into their roles this will be picked up again.

February 2020: The University is still planning on using these slides in their induction, LUU Advice Team are involved.

December 2019: No update to below, Welfare Officer is seeking update alongside Advice.

June 2019: As part of their planning for inductions/Freshers Week, the University of Leeds have been putting together slides that need to feature as part of every induction. This will include information on mental health support available both at the University as well as LUU and locally.

May 2019: New Policy
