The UoL should do more to support international students when they return home

Passed: March 2020 (17th)

What do you want? / Why do you want it?

I would like the University to do more to support International Alumni when they return home, by helping them to build relationships with mentors in industry and other sectors.

This would be an extension of the kind of work that the Alumni Office and Network currently provides, and would help students to see their initiatives and ideas become a reality.

I had an idea of an initiative in the environment sector to mitigate and adapt with climate change, and this initiative was inspired by a similar one I have learnt about in my class; but unfortunately, I did not know from where I can start and how I can implement it with different circumstances in my home country in a context different than that in Leeds. From here came the idea of a mentoring program from University of Leeds for students with initiatives inspired from studying at University of Leeds or by living here in Leeds and in the United Kingdom, in general. It is not only mentoring these students here for how they can implement their ideas when they come back to their home countries, it is also about following up with these responsible leaders for the progress of their initiatives and how can the University provide them with what is needed for the development of their initiatives.

Updates

June 2020: Unfortunately there are no major updates to this work over the summer as a result of lots of LUU staff being furloughed (ongoing), as well as the LUU building and campus being closed. As staff return to work and the new Officer team settle into their roles this will be picked up again.

March 2020: LUU's first ever International Officer, Franks, has been elected. This and several other policies will fall under his remit.

March 2020: New Policy - the proposer has already met with staff from University Careers Service, alongside Political Engagement Team, and this dialogue will continue.
