LUU should continue to aim for a 3:1 student to non-student staff ratio

Passed: November 2019 (18th)

What do you want? / Why do you want it?

Over the last few years, LUU has targeted a three student staff to one non-student staff ratio in jobs at the Union. This has been an internal target, and something that we use on our ‘Performance Dashboard’ and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

The aim is to create jobs for our members in an environment that is flexible, student-led and focussed on developing their skills and experiences.

I’m proposing that we create policy to hold LUU to this aim - maximising opportunities that we provide for our members, reinvesting in them and creating quality student jobs wherever possible.

Updates

August 2020: Furlough of staff over the summer and wider structural changes, as a result of Covid, have seen this ratio drop to 2:1. As the building opens back up and we take on student staff this figure should settle at around 3:1 again. This target now sits in our LUU Operational Objectives and is regularly assessed.

March 2020: The latest figures are 3:1 (436:151) Student: Non-Student

December 2019: Current figures from HR are that our staff numbers are currently reported as 342 weekly paid staff and 174 monthly paid staff, totalling 516 altogether. This currently sits at a 2:1 ratio at present, outside of our target of 3:1 student to non-student staff ratio. Since October we have filled 25 roles and Rolling Recruitment is currently live which will help bring student employment figures up, bringing LUU nearer to the 3:1 target. These figures will fluctuate across the year but the ambition is for the yearly average to sit at 3:1.

November 2019: New Policy. However, as outlined in the proposal this is a target that LUU have been aiming for across the last few strategies and are currently achieving.
