LUU should register as a TerraCycle Collection Location

Passed: May 2019 (16th)

What do you want? / Why do you want it?

TerraCycle is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to recycle "unrecyclable" products, ranging from crisp packets to stationary. The process is very easy:

  • LUU could sign up to be a public collector by simply using an email address.

  • Sign-up would be required to each recycling 'stream', such as Walkers Crisp Packet Recycling Program.

  • LUU collect the relevant items, potentially in a large cardboard box.

  • When ready, a label is printed off from the website, attached to the box and either picked up by UPS or dropped off to a dedicated drop-off point.

I believe that this could be led by sustainability services, but I don't believe it would require a huge amount of extra effort to whichever department took charge.

Increasing amounts of waste are finding their ways into the environment, resulting in devastating damage. I believe that LUU could lead the way in zero-waste recycling by signing up to TerraCycle, setting a precedent to other Leeds institutions and other national university unions.

Updates

August 2020: Not a priority for Lotti, Community Officer, but we will continue to work on improving the recycling options available at LUU.

June 2020: Unfortunately there are no major updates to this work over the summer as a result of lots of LUU staff being furloughed (ongoing), as well as the LUU building and campus being closed. As staff return to work and the new Officer team settle into their roles this will be picked up again.

December 2019: As below, this is part of a wider project we're undertaking with the University around waste removal generally and provision of bins across LUU and campus.

September 2019: LUU Facilities Team's initial focus is on ensuring that our current waste streams/bins are working effectively - lots of work being done on looking at whether we have the right sorts of bins in the right places around the building and what we can do to make it easier for students to dispose of their waste correctly. Until we're confident that what we're currently doing is working, we won't be applying to be part of TerraCycle as the risk at the moment is that is confuses an already confusing system.
