LUU should survey students for ideas on a change of use for the St George's Cemetery Chapel
Passed: May 2019 (16th)
What do you want? / Why do you want it?
I have been a PhD student at Leeds for just over a year and I am based both in Mechanical Engineering and the School of Biology. I use St George's field (the old cemetery) quite often as a cut through to get from one school to the other and commonly walk past the striking building in the centre and have often pondered what it could be. After completing some research I have found that it is the old cemetery chapel and is currently used as storage for the library. I believe this is a real shame for such a beautiful building in one of the most scenic parts of campus to be shut away from the public and diminished to a storage outhouse.
I propose that LUU survey students asking for renovation ideas for the building, to change its use as a library store to something more befitting of such an iconic space. Possible renovations could range from a coffee shop, bar or art gallery and I’m sure there are many more possibilities. Post survey, the ideas that have the most support could then be put forward to the university as evidence that the renovation of the St George's Cemetery Chapel has the backing of both LUU and the student body.

August 2020: We are still awaiting full details on what exactly we can and cannot do on campus. However, lots of capital spending and new projects at the University have been cancelled or postponed in an effort to minimise the financial impact of Covid - so convincing them this year to spend money on the chapel might not be possible.
June 2020: Unfortunately we were unable to carry out this survey in March as planned due to Covid-19, and it's currently unclear when students will be fully back on campus. In addition, lots of the LUU Marketing Team have been (and are) furloughed. As staff return to work and the new Officer team settle into their roles this will be picked up again.
December 2019: Proposer and new Research Assistant in Marketing have agreed to carry out this survey in March when the weather is a bit nicer and students are using the space again.
June 2019: Plan is to conduct an in-person survey at the start of the 2019/20 academic year - speaking to students who walk through the cemetery and use the space to gauge their opinion.
May 2019: New Policy
