The Leeds Student Medical Practice should have an alternative method of booking same-day appointments for students with mental health issues

Passed: May 2018 (3rd)

What's It About?

The Leeds Student Medical Practice should institute an online, phone-based or other method of registering for same-day appointments that does not involve having to arrive at the practice at 8:30am and queue

Why Have You Proposed It?

  • Many students are affected by mental health issues, and visiting their GP can be the first step towards accessing treatment

  • However, having to arrive early in the morning for a same day appointment, in person, can be nerve-wracking and inaccessible to students with conditions such as anxiety and depression

  • The current system has the potential to actively deter students from seeking treatment and prolong their difficulties

  • Other student-based medical practices have online systems, such at York University, and LSMP should use best practice and follow this initiative

August 2020: Covid has seen a change in approach from LSMP over the summer, with a hybrid of digital and in person appointments and support available. This will be continuing for the foreseeable future, and may well result in some longer term changes to how LSMP operate and how accessible they are. LUU's Advice Team will continue to monitor this work and reassess in January 2021.

June 2020: Unfortunately there are no major updates to this work over the summer as a result of lots of LUU staff being furloughed (ongoing), as well as the LUU building and campus being closed. As staff return to work and the new Officer team settle into their roles this will be picked up again.

September 2019: Political Engagement Team to follow up with Student Advice team.

June 2019: LSMP now offer online appointments but only for specific things: follow ups on blood tests for example.

April 2019: This is in theory done, but it's now part of the day to day work of the Advice Team to keep reviewing it based on feedback from students.

June 2018: The LUU Student Advice team have met with the proposer and started initial work on this.
